Mammals are animals that have hair or fur on their bodies. Most mammals have babies that grow inside their mothers, and the mothers feed their babies with milk. Humans are mammals, as are dogs, cats, and whales.
Some mammals in Australia are also marsupials (meaning their babies grow in a pouch). The Daintree has some amazing and unique marsupials, such as Bennett’s tree kangaroo.
Bennett’s Tree Kangaroo
Our Favourite Daintree Mammal

- Bennett’s tree kangaroos are only found in the tropical rainforests of Queensland around the Daintree River.
- This amazing kangaroo can climb trees and leap across branches.
- It has thick rusty brown fur.
- Bennett’s tree kangaroos are different from other kangaroos as they have adapted to life in the trees. Their back feet are wider, and their forelimbs are bigger and more muscly than other non-tree dwelling kangaroos, so they can pull themselves up trees.
- They mainly eat plants, leaves, flowers, fruit, and ferns. They are herbivores (they don’t eat meat).
- The Bennett’s tree kangaroo is a near-threatened species.
